The primary condition for a fetus to receive external stimulation is the development of its sensory organs, particularly the auditory system. The purpose of this content is to train the fetus's hearing. The fetal auditory system begins developing around the second month of pregnancy. Although the embryo is still very small, weighing only 2-3 grams, it already possesses all major organs and a human-like facial structure. The fetal auditory system matures through several stages: By the end of the second month, the outer, middle, and inner ears have formed rudimentary structures with basic morphology, though no auditory function exists yet. By the fourth month, the fetus can perceive external sounds.From 6 months (26 weeks gestation), the fetus is equipped to hear sounds and exhibits physiological responses to external auditory stimuli, such as blinking, increased heart rate, yawning, and turning its head.
Starting at 28 weeks (the 7th month), the auditory organs establish connections with the brain via the auditory nerve, transmitting heard information to the brain where it is stored as memory.Although the fetal environment differs from that of adults—the fetus floats in amniotic fluid within the uterine cavity—sound waves reaching the fetus must pass through the abdominal wall, uterine wall, and amniotic fluid. These barriers attenuate sound intensity by approximately 20 decibels during testing. However, the frequency, pitch, and rhythm of sound waves remain largely unchanged and are still transmitted to the fetus.
Thus, any sound that can penetrate the mother's body is perceptible to the fetus. This is because bodily fluids like blood and bodily fluids transmit sound waves far more effectively than air. These auditory stimuli continuously stimulate the fetal auditory organs, promoting their development. Hearing plays a crucial role in human intellectual development. Around the fourth month of pregnancy, the fetus's other sensory organs also begin to develop.
