Regarding ultrasound scans and fetal gender, two common myths persist: 1. Ultrasound can detect the fetus's genitals—seeing a "little penis" indicates a boy, while no "little penis" means a girl.2. Based on ultrasound report data, a long-shaped gestational sac indicates a boy, while a round-shaped sac indicates a girl. So, are these folk tales truly reliable? Determining fetal gender via ultrasound—it's possible. But not 100% accurate. If you ever step into any hospital's ultrasound room, you'll notice a prominent sign on the wall stating something like: "Fetal gender determination for non-medical diagnostic purposes is prohibited."
This confirms that ultrasound can indeed detect fetal gender. However, it's crucial to note: predicting gender via ultrasound is not 100% accurate.
Before 10 weeks gestation—impossible to determine. Although the fetus's gender is genetically determined at conception, in the earliest stages of development, male and female embryos are identical.Initially, embryos of both sexes possess a small bud or protrusion where the genitalia will develop.
Only around week 7 do these buds or protrusions begin differentiating into penises and scrotums or clitorises and labia. Yet even at this stage, ultrasound cannot definitively determine gender. Fetal development is a gradual process requiring time; it does not occur instantaneously.
After 12 weeks of pregnancy—detection becomes possible under favorable conditions. Around 11 weeks, genitalia differences between genders begin to emerge. At this stage, male genitalia often point upward at an angle exceeding 30° relative to the spine, while female genitalia remain relatively horizontal, forming an angle less than 30° with the spine.
However, fetuses move involuntarily in the womb. Therefore, determining gender at this stage largely depends on luck—it's only possible when the fetus happens to be positioned with its back down and face up. Generally, the longer the pregnancy, the more accurate ultrasound-based gender determination becomes.
Predicting fetal gender based on ultrasound data is unreliable.Due to national regulations explicitly prohibiting ultrasound-based fetal gender determination, it is difficult for the general public to ascertain the fetus's sex through this method. Consequently, some "knowledgeable individuals" have devised a system for estimating fetal gender based on ultrasound report data, which broadly includes:
(1) Shape Theory: If the fetus appears eggplant-shaped or elongated, it suggests a higher likelihood of carrying a boy; if round, it indicates carrying a girl.
(2) Data Theory: If the fetus's length and width differ significantly, it suggests a boy; if they are nearly equal or differ by less than a factor of two, it indicates a girl. In reality, these seemingly scientific speculations are entirely unreliable.
Refutation of Shape Theory: The shape of the gestational sac is determined by its tension and the available space for expansion.If the mother's uterine shape is relatively standard, the gestational sac will typically form a round or oval shape after implantation.
If the mother's uterus is irregularly shaped or contains fibroids, the sac's shape may change after implantation. Additionally, the sac's appearance can vary depending on the stage of pregnancy. Furthermore, the shape observed during ultrasound scans differs based on the probe's angle and orientation.
Therefore, judging the baby's gender based on gestational sac shape is unreliable.
Evidence against data-based theories: Clinical experience shows that some sacs with length-to-width ratios exceeding 2:1 result in girls, while others with equal length and width result in boys. Relying solely on this to predict gender is rather frivolous and may unnecessarily cause anxiety.
Summary: Ultrasound can reveal fetal gender after 12 weeks if the fetus is positioned with its back down and face up.
