Baby rabbits are incredibly adorable, bouncing about in a charming way. However, if a human were born with a rabbit-like mouth, it would appear quite bizarre. Yet, many unfortunate children are born with cleft lips. So, what should be done about fetal cleft lip?
Cleft lip, commonly known as "hare lip," refers to a split in the upper lip and is a type of congenital deformity.In a normal fetus, facial structures begin forming after the fifth week as embryonic protrusions gradually fuse together. Abnormal development during this process can lead to deformities, including cleft lip. Cleft lip not only affects the child's facial appearance but also impacts their ability to suckle, chew, and articulate speech.
Causes of Cleft Lip
The precise causes and mechanisms behind this developmental fusion disorder remain incompletely understood. Extensive experimental research and epidemiological studies suggest multiple contributing factors rather than a single cause. Broadly, these factors fall into two categories: genetic and environmental influences. Associated factors include nutritional deficiencies, heredity, maternal infections or trauma, endocrine effects, and medication exposure.
Treatment of Cleft Lip
Surgical intervention is the only effective treatment for cleft lip repair, but it must adhere to the following principles:
1. Timing of Surgery: Unilateral cleft lip repair is generally recommended around six months of age, while bilateral cleft lip repair may be slightly delayed. The child should be in generally good health, free from significant anemia, upper respiratory infections, and local or surrounding tissue infections.
2. Fundamental Surgical Objectives: Restore normal lip and nasal appearance and function as much as possible. Normal lip and nasal structures exhibit the following characteristics: symmetrical nostrils of equal size, centrally positioned nasal tip and columella, non-collapsed alae, symmetrical upper lip height, full vermilion border, slightly protruding philtrum, and a bow-shaped vermilion border. These anatomical features serve as the basis for cleft lip repair surgical planning.
