Is diabetes a chronic condition? It is extremely difficult to cure. Only through consistent dietary management and lifestyle adjustments can its progression be controlled. It inflicts prolonged and enduring harm on patients, necessitating special attention in all aspects of life. Below are precautions for bathing that diabetic patients should observe.
1. Prevent skin damage by accurately judging water temperature. Many patients experience skin ulcers or sores, making skin protection crucial. Avoid bathing if skin is broken, as this risks worsening local infections. Due to common diabetic neuropathy, peripheral nerves lose sensitivity to temperature and pain, making it difficult to gauge water temperature accurately. If scalded, the pain may not be felt immediately. Therefore, water temperatures below 40°C (104°F) are suitable for diabetics. It is advisable to use a thermometer to measure the water temperature during bathing. Choose a well-ventilated space for bathing to prevent accidents like heart attacks or strokes caused by oxygen deprivation in overly warm, poorly ventilated environments.
2. Avoid bathing on an empty stomach. Some patients neglect this caution and bathe after fasting, which can sometimes lead to fainting. Bathing consumes significant energy, markedly increasing the risk of hypoglycemia. If bathing occurs on an empty stomach and hypoglycemia is not promptly addressed, it may pose a life-threatening risk. Therefore, it is recommended that diabetic patients ensure they have eaten before bathing, as blood sugar levels are relatively stable after a meal.Additionally, bathing sessions should not be excessively long; taking a break every 15 minutes is advisable. If hunger arises after bathing, it is best to consume a small meal. Furthermore, carefully inspect all body parts for cuts, burns, or other injuries, paying particular attention to areas like the lower limbs and soles of the feet that may be difficult to notice. If burns or wounds are discovered, seek prompt specialized medical attention to prevent worsening infections.
