Diabetes patients typically exhibit characteristic symptoms. Beyond dietary control and exercise, they should also focus on hydration to manage their condition. Drinking water should not be delayed until thirst arises, as adequate hydration inherently prevents many diseases—diabetes being no exception. So why should diabetics drink more water?
Some diabetes patients may wonder if increased food intake helps effectively eliminate sugar. But what methods can effectively limit dietary sugar intake for diabetes? When diabetics consume excessive food, it increases sugar intake and absorption, raising blood glucose levels. Since diabetes involves damaged pancreatic islets that produce less insulin, the body cannot promptly secrete insulin. Consequently, ingested sugar remains unused, further elevating blood sugar and increasing sugar excretion in urine.Water, however, is not sugar. Therefore, drinking water not only fails to raise blood sugar but also dilutes the blood, lowering glucose levels. Simultaneously, it reduces blood viscosity, offering significant benefits in preventing complications like cerebral infarction and myocardial infarction.
Diabetics should consciously increase water intake in daily life, drinking appropriately even when not thirsty. Mild dehydration may not trigger thirst sensations. Prolonged stimulation of the thirst center reduces its sensitivity, diminishing the body's perception of fluid loss. Consequently, even when dehydrated, individuals often lack the sensation of thirst.
In such cases, failing to drink water when not feeling thirsty can harm the body. Reduced blood volume may cause dizziness and memory impairment. Dehydration leading to low urine output and reduced sweating decreases metabolic waste excretion, increasing the risk of urinary tract stones and infections. Therefore, diabetic patients should drink water appropriately even without thirst to benefit their health.
Additionally, increased water intake is necessary when consuming protein-rich foods, engaging in strenuous exercise, experiencing heavy sweating, or bathing. Milk and soy milk serve as excellent hydration options for diabetics. Daily consumption of these beverages helps alleviate calcium deficiency. Soy milk, containing dietary fiber, is particularly suitable for overweight diabetics with high blood lipids or hypertension.
The above explains why diabetics should drink more water. In daily care, paying attention to small lifestyle details can effectively prevent complications and worsening of diabetes. Therefore, patients should maintain a positive mindset when facing this disease.
