Many assume only children drool while sleeping, but adults do too. What causes sleep drooling? Most often, it stems from poor sleeping positions like resting your head on a desk or sleeping on your side. However, persistent or sudden worsening may signal underlying health issues requiring attention. So what causes frequent sleep drooling?
1. Anterior Dental Malocclusion
Dental misalignment is a primary cause of sleep drooling, particularly in patients with protruding front teeth. When the upper or lower front teeth significantly jut forward, the lips often cannot fully cover them during sleep. This results in an open-mouth position with teeth exposed, allowing saliva to leak out. Such patients should seek orthodontic correction promptly.
2. Medication Factors
Physical fatigue, mental overexertion, or certain medications can trigger neurological disturbances. During sleep, the brain may send erroneous signals, increasing saliva production and leading to drooling. For instance, drooling is a common side effect of some anti-epileptic drugs. Therefore, impaired neural regulation can also cause drooling during sleep. Certain neurotic disorders or systemic diseases that may disrupt autonomic nervous function can lead to abnormal parasympathetic excitation during sleep. This causes the brain to send erroneous signals, resulting in increased saliva production.
4. Poor Oral Hygiene
Oral ulcers accompanied by significant pain can stimulate increased saliva secretion due to the pain stimulus, making drooling more likely.Additionally, the warmth and moisture of the oral cavity provide an ideal environment for bacterial growth. Food debris or sugars trapped between teeth or on tooth surfaces can easily lead to cavities and periodontal disease. Accumulated food particles causing excessive tartar buildup and gum inflammation trigger oral inflammation, which further stimulates saliva production. In such cases, medication to promote local ulcer healing can resolve the drooling issue.
5. Facial Nerve Inflammation or Stroke
This represents the most serious cause of sleep drooling, often occurring after facial exposure to cold, wind, or a cold. Such cases warrant immediate vigilance. Beyond drooling, patients may exhibit other pronounced symptoms like facial asymmetry, headaches, or other clear signs of facial nerve inflammation or stroke. Prompt medical evaluation is strongly advised. This condition is more commonly observed in middle-aged and elderly individuals or those with cardiovascular or cerebrovascular diseases.
When adults experience drooling during sleep, it is crucial not to become mentally burdened. Seek examination at a reputable hospital first. Treatment should target the underlying condition causing the drooling, such as neurosis or oral inflammation.Second, cultivate healthy dietary habits: avoid lying down immediately after meals, refrain from overeating or consuming hard-to-digest foods for dinner, and establish hygiene practices like rinsing your mouth after meals and brushing teeth before bed to reduce oral inflammation. Additionally, avoid strenuous exercise or excessive mental exertion before sleep.
