Many people snore during sleep, which disrupts rest. Some even grind their teeth—a more alarming issue that severely degrades sleep quality. Do you know why teeth grinding occurs? Experts suggest excessive stress is a likely cause. Let's explore why high stress triggers teeth grinding and other contributing factors in daily life.
Why Excessive Stress Triggers Teeth Grinding
Research data from a survey of white-collar workers shows that individuals experiencing high stress levels are significantly more likely to grind their teeth than their less-stressed counterparts. This indicates that excessive pressure can readily trigger sleep-related teeth grinding.
Experts explain that individuals under high stress often grind their teeth during sleep because prolonged stress induces significant anxiety. To subconsciously escape this pressure, many unconsciously grind their teeth while asleep.
Causes of Teeth Grinding
Poor Digestive Health
Some individuals have weaker digestive systems. Consuming excessive food at night can cause undigested food to linger in the stomach and intestines. To process this, the body may engage in continuous chewing motions. Since our minds aren't self-regulated during sleep, teeth grinding occurs.
Abnormal Sleeping Positions
Individual sleeping postures vary, and certain positions can trigger teeth grinding. Frequently sleeping on one side can cause uneven tension in the chewing muscles. This uneven pressure leads to contraction on the compressed side, directly resulting in grinding. To prevent grinding from this cause, sleeping on your back is recommended.
