Causes and treatments for vivid dreams
 Encyclopedic
 PRE       NEXT
This refers to factors within the dreamer themselves—psychological, physiological, emotional changes, and alterations in internal organs and tissues—that contribute to dreaming. These include endocrine imbalances, overheating of the body, gastrointestinal states like extreme hunger, pain, bloating, or illness, as well as psychological shifts and emotional fluctuations. Specifically, the following factors are involved:
1. Puberty.Rapid hormonal secretion and development lead to vivid dreams of flying, playing, running, socializing with friends, nocturnal emissions, or dream intercourse;
2. Overeating. Sleeping with a full stomach allows gastrointestinal distension to stimulate the brain, often resulting in food-related dreams;
3. Illness-induced dreaming.Digestive issues, localized pain, or fever can trigger vivid or nightmarish dreams. Bronchitis patients experiencing coughing and wheezing may dream of suffocation and exhaustion, while improved breathing may induce dreams of flying;
4. Bladder Overfilling. This is the primary cause of nocturia and why adults often dream of searching for a restroom;
5. Internal Parasites (Roundworms, Hookworms).Individuals with parasites may grind their teeth during sleep and frequently dream of arguments or shouting matches. 6. Excessive worry. As the saying goes, "What you think about during the day appears in your dreams at night." Overthinking certain matters may manifest in dreams. For instance, Go masters often report dreaming about Go-related scenarios.Excessive concern for one's health and heightened focus on dream sensations can amplify dream experiences, further intensifying health anxieties and fear of insomnia, creating a vicious cycle.
7. Visual stimuli. Objects encountered during wakefulness are often woven into dreams, particularly intense stimuli. Severe shocks like torture or fright can lead to recurring nightmares.For instance, survivors of Nazi concentration camps in Germany still struggled with recurring nightmares 15 years later.
Exogenous Dream-Inducing Factors
These involve external stimuli affecting the dreamer's senses—such as sound, light, color, temperature, or physical objects—that stimulate hearing, vision, smell, or touch.
1. Exposure to red light: Prone to dreaming of flames and lightning;
2. Noisy sleeping environment: Hearing loud rumbling noises while sleeping may lead to dreams of thunder or cannon fire;
3. Perfume dripping near the nose: Prone to dreaming of wandering through fragrant flower beds;
4.Sleeping on the left side: Pressure on the left ribcage affects heartbeat, leading to dreams of chest tightness, shortness of breath, or falling off cliffs;
5. Sleeping with head covered or heavy blankets: Prone to nightmares of being crushed by monsters;
6. Children kicking off blankets while sleeping: Dreams of snowfall and howling winds.
What to do about vivid dreams?
Acupressure
Pressing the following acupoints can alleviate insomnia and vivid dreams: Xinshu (CV17), Laogong (PC8), Shenmen (HT6), Zusanli (ST36), Sanyinjiao (SP6), Yinbai (SP1), Lidui (ST40), and Taichong (LR3).
Gua Sha
Perform scraping therapy on the following ten acupoints in descending order: Baihui, Fengchi, Jiansheng, Anmian, Xinshu, Shenmen, Zusanli, Sanyinjiao, Xingjian, Yongquan.
Apply a layer of gua sha medium, then use the gua sha tool to directly scrape the patient's skin repeatedly over specific areas until petechiae appear.
Improving Sleep Quality
Avoid going to bed too late; aim to sleep between 9:00 PM and 10:00 PM. Refrain from mental or physical exertion before bedtime. Consider taking a walk or soaking feet in warm water. Eat a light dinner and avoid eating before bed. Remove outer clothing while sleeping, wearing only a shirt and shorts. Ensure the pillow is appropriately sized and firm.
Foot Soak
Herbal Ingredients: 18g Codonopsis, 15g each Astragalus and Ziziphus jujuba seed, 12g each Atractylodes, Angelica, Poria, and Albizia bark, 10g Longan flesh, 6g Polygala, 5 dates.
Preparation: Soak all herbs in clean water for 30 minutes. Add 2000ml water and decoct. Boil for 20 minutes, then strain to collect the liquid. Take the first decoction in two doses (morning and evening). Use the second decoction to soak feet before bed while still warm. Perform once daily for 30 minutes each session. Change the herbal mixture daily. One course of treatment lasts 7 days.
Indications: Insomnia due to deficiency of both heart and spleen; accompanied by frequent dreaming, easy awakening, palpitations, forgetfulness, fatigue, and dull complexion.
Effects: Tonifies the heart and spleen, nourishes qi, and calms the spirit.
Increase Exercise
Whether it's a simple walk, qigong, tai chi, running, or hiking, moderate exercise helps enhance the body's neural regulation, boosts basal metabolism, and alleviates neurasthenia.
Avoid oversleeping
Limit sleep duration. Human sleep cycles through alternating phases of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. The first cycle lasts approximately 90 minutes, beginning with NREM followed by a brief (about 10-minute) REM phase. This pattern repeats, alternating between NREM and REM sleep.With each cycle, the duration of REM sleep increases, reaching up to an hour in the final cycle. Therefore, the more you sleep, the more REM sleep you experience—and the more vivid your dreams become.
Enjoy sleep-promoting foods before bedtime
Millet Porridge
Millet porridge is exceptionally gentle on the stomach. Consuming it before bedtime can also enhance sleep quality.Rich in tryptophan, millet porridge has a calming effect that aids sleep. When insomnia strikes, a bowl of millet porridge may help.
Milk
Enjoy a glass of milk before bed—preferably warm. Warm milk contains tryptophan, which has a soothing effect on the body.
Oats
Many people use oats for weight loss because they're high in fiber. Oats contain N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine, an excellent sleep-promoting compound. So when you can't sleep, try having a bowl of oats before bed.
Dream Content
If you dream frequently, consider whether your dreams often feature the following:
Recollections of Illusory Past Events
Combinations of scenes or situations seen in movies, novels, or personal experiences replaying in your dreams. These dreams are characterized by ethereal, absurd, or distorted phantoms and fictional overlaps.
Completing Unfinished Business
Vividly finishing tasks left undone during the day after falling asleep: For instance, anger or arguments during the day may lead to dreams of fights or even wars at night. A disappointing English exam during the day might result in dreams of spelling English words.
Compensating for Life's Shortcomings
For instance, those in dire poverty may dream of wealth; when afflicted by illness, people or events longed for or remembered may appear in dreams; sexually mature unmarried youths may experience sexual arousal in dreams, leading to nocturnal emissions or dream intercourse.
Responding to Stimuli
For instance, the howling wind or the patter of rain may lead to dreams of trudging through rain; a rich fragrance might inspire dreams of wandering through flower beds teeming with bees and butterflies or partaking in sumptuous feasts; feeling heat underfoot could result in dreams of standing atop a volcano or fighting fires.A full bladder may prompt dreams of searching for a restroom to relieve oneself. Inspiration for Creation and Invention Individuals engaged in long-term intellectual development research, those with intense mental focus, or inventors may experience sudden flashes of inspiration in dreams, leading to inventions or creative breakthroughs. Reactions or Precursors to Physical Illness Dreaming of one's kidneys growing larger day and night may indicate kidney stones.Some individuals frequently dream of falling, and upon neurological examination, are diagnosed with cerebellar ataxia. How to Interpret Different Dreams Dreaming of Daytime Events If the dream plot is ordinary and unremarkable, merely depicting mundane activities, it indicates the dreamer is not in deep sleep and their conscious mind remains active.
Reason: Traditional Chinese Medicine states "the spleen governs intention." People having such dreams either have poor digestive function (specifically stomach issues) or impaired spleen absorption. As we know, when asleep, certain brain regions rest—what TCM calls the "soul" resting—while the "spirit" remains active. During this time, the gastrointestinal tract continues peristalsis, digestion, and absorption.Many individuals have weakened digestive function. Insufficient po activity alone cannot complete this task, compelling the body to enlist the resting hun to assist. This mobilization generates vivid, fully recallable dream sequences. Another common sleep manifestation in such individuals is drooling, which also indicates spleen dysfunction.
