While falling asleep may come easily when tired, achieving restful, deep sleep is not so simple. Shi Ming, Deputy Director of Shanghai Traditional Chinese Medicine Insomnia Medical Collaboration Center, emphasizes that ensuring sleep quality begins with selecting a proper sleeping position. This not only promotes peaceful rest but also supports physical and mental health, prevents illness, and may even aid in treatment.
Generally, sleeping positions can be categorized into four types: supine (on your back), prone (on your stomach), right-side lying, and left-side lying. Among these, right-side lying is the most ergonomically sound and comfortable posture. It allows the limbs to bend naturally while keeping internal organs in their optimal positions—the heart elevated and uncompressed, and the liver positioned lower for better blood supply and enhanced metabolism.Simultaneously, the entire body remains relaxed, and breathing becomes steady and even. While right-side sleeping offers the greatest comfort, different sleeping positions emphasize distinct health benefits for individuals with varying needs.
For beauty and wrinkle prevention, sleep on your back. In this position, facial skin achieves optimal relaxation, with blood circulation unimpeded. This helps prevent premature wrinkle formation and maintains a radiant complexion.
Elevate legs for varicose veins. Patients with severe cases should sleep supine with both legs elevated approximately 20 degrees (avoid excessive height) to maximize blood return to the inferior vena cava and reduce venous load on the lower limbs.
Sleep on your side for nasal congestion. During colds, when both nasal passages are blocked and sleep is difficult, switching to a side-lying position can help. Within minutes, the mucosal blood vessels in the upper nasal passage constrict, reducing congestion and restoring airflow.
Right side for gastritis, left side for liver conditions. Patients with gastric ulcers, various types of gastritis, or digestive disorders should sleep on their right side. However, those with reflux esophagitis should sleep on their left side. Patients with hepatitis or cirrhosis should sleep on their back or left side to avoid pressure on the affected area.
For high blood pressure, pillow height is critical. Hypertensive patients should adopt a supine sleeping position while selecting an appropriately sized pillow—ideally around 15 centimeters. A pillow that is too low increases cerebral blood flow, while one that is too high causes discomfort.
The above offers a brief overview of sleeping positions. We hope this information proves helpful and wish you well-being.
